Pat Sutton - Portland Purveyor of Vintage Golf Clubs + Antiques
Mr. Sutton is a native Oregonian who graduated from Oregon State University. Unlike most golf professionals he has spent his entire career at Riverside Golf & Country Club in Portland, Oregon. Beginning as an assistant golf professional in 1978 and in 1983 he was promoted to Head Golf Professional, the title in which he still holds. As a golf historian, Pat is an avid collector of rare golf books, balls and clubs.
Mr. Sutton finds promising antique golf clubs and memorabilia from across the world. Pat often travels throughout the United States, Scotland, France, Belgium and Canada to add even the finest items to his historic golf arsenal.
We recently sat down to go peruse Pat's golf clubs that we could collaborate on. The first iteration is the Pat Sutton Hickory Putter Collection. We've infused new life into these once forgotten putters through elbow grease and love of the game to ensure they end up back in the bags of players who relish the craftsmanship and hand forged quality of a bygone era.
After selecting our initial offering of clubs, we convinced Pat to take us on a small tour of his collection. Relics of some of the local favorites like Alderwood Country Club, 1947 Ryder Cup & 1946 PGA Championship at Portland Golf Club, Photo Book from 1910 of Seattle Golf Club were all quite the site to see, but we had my eyes on some golf course architecture books, more specifically, C.B. Macdonald + A.W. Tillinghast. Let's say Mr. Sutton did not disappoint.

These belonged at one time to Lionel Conacher (1900-1954) deemed Canada’s Greatest Athlete for the first half of the 20th century. He won the Ontario 125-pound wrestling championship at age 16 and the Canadian light-heavyweight boxing championship at 20. He played on the championship Ontario lacrosse team in 1922 and on the Toronto American Athletic Association championship baseball team in 1926. He also played rugby for Toronto in the Ontario Football Rugby Union (1920) and for the Toronto Argonauts (1921–22). His most sustained professional sport was ice hockey; he played as a defense man in the National Hockey League (1925–37) with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Chicago Black Hawks, the New York Americans, and the Montreal Maroons and was a member of Stanley Cup winning teams in 1934 (Chicago) and 1935 (Montreal).
Conacher was elected to the Ontario legislature in 1937. During World War II he was recreational director for the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was elected to Parliament in 1949 and 1953. He died of a heart attack after hitting a triple in a softball game between members of Parliament and the parliamentary press gallery. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, posthumously, in 1994.
Mr’ Conacher and his brother Charlie Conacher, purchased some land in Wasaga Beach Ontario and developed the Wasaga Beach Golf and Country Club (Now known as Marlwood Golf Course). They purchased the land from my Grandfather John Franklin (Jack) Longhurst. Granddad stayed with them as one of their Greens keepers. Lionel and him struck up a friendship, and Lionel gave these clubs to my grandfather. When Granddad passed, they were left to my father and now they are mine.
They were on display at the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in Calgary until recently when I requested their return.
Is there anyone who can tell me how much they are worth or who serious collectors of this kind of sports memorabilia is worth. I have photos of the clubs with me and while they were on display at the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Thank You In Advance.
