PORTLAND GOLF CLUB - CELEBRATING 100 Years

During the recent weeks, Portland Golf Club was kind enough to allow our photography team from Marrow Magazine to document the beautiful imagery taken with film on our home page with the head professional and Northwest golfing legend, Mr. Tim Hval.

Established in 1914, Portland Golf Club (PGC) celebrates it's centennial next year.  This gorgeous private club not more than 10 minutes from the SEAMUS manufacturing facility sports a challenging and enjoyable walking 18 hole course.   Aside from just serving host as host to the Portland Open, PGA Championship, Ryder Cup, US Senior Amateur (and Open), LPGA Tour, numerous regional events, PGC claims a stake as being part of numerous significant historic moments for North American and Pacific Northwest golf.

Ben Hogan, arguably one of the greatest golfers in history, made many stops at PGC.

In 1945, Mr. Ben Hogan won the Portland Open, which brought him a grand prize of just under $2,700 in war bonds.  One of golf's majors would make it's way to Portland Golf Club in 1946, with the PGA Championship at a time when it was still played match play (and under the long lost rules of stymies).  Mr. Hogan again triumphed, beating Jimmy Demaret in the Semi-finals and Ed (Porky) Oliver 6 and 4 in the finals.

During the war, the Ryder Cup was halted and took a 10 year hiatus until a member of PGC and successful businessman Mr. Hudson financed the 1947 Ryder Cup from his own pocket book.  The British team arrived on the Queen Mary in New York, where Mr. Hudson met them for a grand evening at the Waldorf Astoria, and further accompanied them to the west coast by train.  The United States team, captained by Ben Hogan, was so strong with Walter Hagen, Jimmy Demaret, Sam Snead, and Byron Nelson, that they defeated the British team 11-1.

Sadly, we cannot claim Mr. Hogan's head covers as being from SEAMUS GOLF.

Champions of other tournaments hosted by Portland Golf Club include Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Cary MIddlecoff, Greg Norman, Gary Player, Payne Stewart, Fred Couples, Billy Casper, Kathy Whitworth, Donna Caponi and Nancy Lopez.

In May of this year, the USGA announced that Portland Golf Club would host the 2015 US Women's Amateur Championship.

SEAMUS GOLF was lucky to draft a set of offerings for the club members, and we took it as an opportunity to try something completely different and unique for the club.  With the release of the new club logo for the 100 year celebration, we embroidered the top of the covers during production and found the results to be astounding.

We wish to congratulate Portland Golf Club and the members for a stunning first 100 years, and wish them the best in the next Centennial.
